Unlike the average American who makes goals to lose weight, find a new job, or a get a promotion, my goals or FOCUS for the year usually come from what I sense God is doing and how He wants me to be a part of it. This year I developed my framework for my YEAR's FOCUS from the challenge Pastor Max put out to our adult congregation. He asked them two questions. In summary; Who in your life is going through stuff and needs the Lord and how are you and the church going to reach them this year? What do YOU need for your life this year and how can the church and God help you?
So I reversed the order of those two thoughts putting my personal needs first. I've always sought to help people, encourage people, and share Christ with people when the opportunity presents itself. But I've found that when I try to pour into others when I'm not being poured into myself, that the advice I give, the encouragement I offer is usually not that great. So I believe for this new year as I continue to seek to know God more, live the life he's called me to, and share His love with everyone around me I need to take care of me first. So this is my plan.
To take care of my spiritual health I've established three principles to cling to and use to guide my pursuit of God.
1. Devotion: I need to remain committed to God everyday, inviting him to be a part of every part of my life. Talking to him throughout the day, reading His word, and listening to what He has to say.
2. Mentoring & Accountability: I find encouragement when I allow others to pour into me. I've connected with a few older and wiser people in my life who allow me to use them as a resource for encouragement, wisdom, prayer, and inspiration. I share with them about my spiritual journey and listen to their experiences and stories. This year I plan to embrace these relationships even more.
3. Share the Load: God has not called us to do the work alone. He promises to be with us through all that we do. So this year to help me do what he has called me to, He needs to be equally involved in. So I am going to make proactive choices everyday to involved God in everything I do, especially the things that cause me stress, irritation, worry or fear.
Now the coolest part of all this focus on me is that by keeping myself in balance I believe God will do even greater things through me to show his LOVE to the community around, to my neighbors, to my friends, and to the teens I minister to here at Summit Youth. My passion and desire is to see lives transformed by God to live a different life that he has set a part for each and every one of us; to see the fulfillment and joy that comes from knowing God, walking with him, and trusting in His word.
This year, in my life and at Summit Youth, God is going to be faithful to us when we are faithful to him. So this year I am committing myself to faithfulness to God and faithfulness to the calling he has put on me. MY challenge this past week to my teens was to join me in this adventure. Together, we can better be the LIGHT OF THE WORLD!
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5; 14-16
